The Hudson River D’Oh-by / Ep 427 / Blue City Radio

Episode 427:

Since the introduction of NYCFC into Major League Soccer in 2015 the rivalry matches between NYCFC and Red Bull have always been special games filled with drama, tension, and memorable moments.

This past weekend in Yankee Stadium the script changed and a toothless NYCFC wasted nearly an hour of the match without recording a single shot against the opponent. In what most fans and pundits determined was a must-win match for both sides, Nick Cushing seemed to be playing for the draw from the opening whistle. Cushing has often in the past said, “games are won and lost in key moments” and it was clear based on the in-game choices that the gaffer was avoiding at all costs a defensive lapse that would result in the loss over the risk taking necessary to earn the full three points.

This week Mike Anderer and Mike Allen welcome John Baney (@thePigeonsNYCFC) from Hudson River Blue to breakdown the game, discuss what options and decisions support their opinions and other stories around the league.

The NYCFC Exodus Continues… / Ep 426 / Blue City Radio

Episode 426:

There were times when earning four points in a week would be considered a positive for NYCFC. There were times when a back-up rookie striker with two goals and less than 500 minutes would be considered a non-story.

In 2023 as the team sits on 30 points with six games to go and with the only true striker on the team not being 90 minutes fit, neither of those two statements can be considered acceptable by the team or its fanbase.

This week Mike, J.R. DiBart and Mike Allen look back at the amorphous NYCFC roster and the last two home games in Yankee Stadium.

There’s postgame audio from Nick Cushing, Birk Risa, Mounsef Bakrar, Tayvon Gray, Matt Freese, Kevin O’Toole, and Justin Haak.

The Legend of Maxime / Ep 425 / Blue City Radio

Episode 425:

I’m a little confused about what to write. There’s a sense of disbelief about the announcement from today. It’s a sensation we all recognize. That pause when we ask ourselves, “Is this really happening?”

Yes, the longest tenured player for NYCFC has abruptly left the club to return to Corsica. Just shy of his 200th appearance for the club, Maxime Chanot made the difficult decision to go home.

Few can fault his logic, but the criticism is evident for Nick Cushing and David Lee, if Maxime’s decision was influenced by the culture in the locker room.

This week Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen get into the rumors that are now official. They also talk about Messi’s trip to NJ and recap the 3-0 loss away in Cincinatti.

Rinse and Repeat, the NYCFC Way Of Losing Under Cushing / Ep 424 / Blue City Radio

Episode 424:

Mike Allen returns to the NYCFC press box and to Blue City Radio. The relationship between Mike and NYCFC head coach, Nick Cushing, has improved greatly since the last time the two met tet-a-tet in the Citi Field press conference room, but the results are eerily similar.

NYCFC continues to get the chances and shots, but this continues to be the season of “almost moments”. As the final nine games approach and the magic number for making the playoffs looms, the team is in desperate need of a breakout moment.

This week Mike Anderer and Mike Allen look back on the disappointing result from Sunday and the key choices from Cushing that might be impacting the results on the field.

The Outfield Take Over BCR / Ep 423 / Blue City Radio

Episode 423:

This past week was a tough one for NYCFC fans. Add to that the loss of the US Women’s National team to Sweden and it compounds the misery. Only the return of NYCFC legend, Maxi Moralez, can lessen the blow to fans.

This week Paul Harvey (@Thundering165) and Chris Campbell (@SoupInNY27) from The Outfield (@OutfieldNYCFC) join the show to share their thoughts on the NYCFC loss in League’s Cup and the USWNT ending their bid for their third straight World Cup.

Hanging With the City Boys / Ep 422 / Blue City Radio

Episode 422:

You’re not dreaming. NYCFC actually thumped an opponent. Granted it was Toronto, but former NYCFC captain, Sean Johnson, was in net for the Reds, so the level of enjoyment is high. The victory also meant that NYCFC should advance in the Leagues Cup, which they did after Atlas defeated Toronto on Sunday.

This week Mike Anderer and Mike Allen welcome Danny and Javier Gutierrez from The City Boys Podcast to the show. Together they breakdown last week’s victory and talk about the new players joining the squad.

Gabby Gabby Gone / Ep 421 / Blue City Radio

Episode 421:

League’s Cup has arrived. NYCFC hosted Atlas on Sunday at CitiField and that’s not even the biggest news story of the week.

Forward Gabriel Pereira departed the team the day before to continue his playing career in Qatar.

This week Mike welcomes Christian Smith from Five Borough Footy and John Baney of NYCFC Pigeons to the show to discuss what the departure of NYCFC’s leading goal scorer means for the rest of the season and the remainder of League’s Cup.

NYCFC Are Embarrassed In Philly / Ep 420 / Blue City Radio

Episode 420:

The criticism might sound too harsh. NYCFC held more of the ball on Saturday at Subaru Park. NYCFC created more goal scoring chances in the game. In the end, the two goals they conceded made the team appear very weak. Ultimately, it is a match most NYCFC fans and the team will quickly want to forget.

This week Mike and J.R. welcome in for the first time on the podcast Scott Churchson. Scott is co-owner of Stream Punk Entertainment and has been covering NYCFC since 2021. Together they talk about the new roster moves, the probability of NYCFC making the MLS Cup Playoffs and recap the key moments from Saturday’s loss.

The Justin Haak Redemption Curve / Ep 419 / Blue City Radio

Episode 419:

It was another week for NYCFC with two consecutive draws. Nick Cushing’s squad was hopeful to build off the momentum of the first road win away in Montreal but a poor clearance by defender, Justin Haak, in the Charlotte game would prove to be costly. NYCFC did earn a point in that match thanks to a late goal by Braian Cufre. It was more late heroics in Columbus as Justin Haak entered the history books being the first home grown player to score in a competitive match. Sadly the intensity of Columbus even down a man would prove to be more pressure than NYCFC could absorb.

This week Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen look back at the crazy two games and even touch a little on the USMNT as they continue their Gold Cup run.

True Story: NYCFC Gets a Win / Ep 418 / Blue City Radio

Episode 418:

Everyone knew the moment would come eventually. Everyone knew that NYCFC would not go the rest of the regular season winless, but the streak kept creeping along, through May and then through most of June.

This week Mike Anderer and Mike Allen jump on the microphones to discuss the victory from Stade Saputo against CF Montreal. There’s also audio from Nick Cushing and Justin Haak in the episode. Our resident Justin Haak critic, J.R. deBart was oddly unavailable for this week’s recording. We are sure he’s on scripting some eloquent praise for the NYCFC homegrown player that he will share on an upcoming episode.
